Getting TEFL certified in India
India is a country of welcoming people and a rich and extremely diverse culture, and teaching in India can be a challenging, yet very rewarding experience. Here we answer a few questions to help you decide if taking a TEFL course in India is right for you, and how to go about it.
Why take a TEFL course in India?
If you want to teach in India, there are several advantages to getting your TEFL qualification there first.
- You’ll have the chance to see if you like the Indian culture and way of life enough to spend a year or more there. On the off chance that you don’t, then provided you’ve taken an accredited course, you’ll still hold a valid TEFL certificate that you can use anywhere else in the world.
- You’ll teach Indian students as part of the teaching practice element of your TEFL course. This means you’ll get to know the particular issues that speakers of Indian languages have with learning English, as well as any cultural norms and expectations that may affect their attitude to learning. This knowledge and experience can be invaluable when you start teaching Indian students after getting your TEFL certificate.
- The centre where you take your course will most likely have contacts with local language schools or voluntary organisations, giving you a head start over those who have qualified elsewhere. For foreign teachers, a lot of English teaching work in India is with voluntary organisations, as employment visas are rarely, if at all, issued to foreign English teachers. Some TEFL course providers offer internship programs which allow you to get your TEFL certificate and then teach on a volunteer basis for up to a year.
Where can I take a TEFL certification course in India?
You can get TEFL qualified in a number of different locations across India, from Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka state in the south, and the centre of India’s tech industry, to Mumbai, India’s largest city, on the west coast. You can take a Trinity Cert TESOL course in India on the Arabian sea coast in Kerala, and if you’re looking for a CELTA, these are offered by the British Council in Chennai, Kolkata and the capital New Delhi. Take your time looking at what the different centres offer in terms of help with employment or volunteering after the certification course, as well as other sources of voluntary or paid work.
When are TEFL courses held in India?
Courses are held year round, with some centres offering up to 8 or more courses per calendar year. Unlike in some countries, where most TEFL employment starts at a certain time of year, there is not really a “best” time to do your TEFL course in India, as voluntary organisations tend to need volunteers throughout the year.
What types of TEFL course can I take?
Most TEFL providers in India offer 3, 4 or 5 week intensive courses, including an observed, assessed teaching practicum. These two factors, the duration of course and the inclusion of a teaching practicum, allow these providers to meet internationally accepted standards for TEFL courses. Some providers in India also offer specialist courses in teaching young learners and business English. Skills in teaching young learners can be especially useful for the type of English teaching work available to foreign teachers in India.
Do I need any qualifications to do TEFL in India?
You will need to be able to cope academically with the demands of an intensive course and have a native or near-native level of English. Most TEFL certification providers also require you to be at least 18 years of age. Having a university degree is not normally a requirement.
